Christmas Day

Christmas Day, observed annually on December 25, is a nationwide statutory holiday in Canada that marks the birth of Jesus Christ while serving as a major mid-winter occasion for family gatherings and festive cheer. Across the country, Canadians celebrate the day with gift exchanges, holiday feasts, and winter outdoor activities.

Christmas originated as a Christian feast commemorating the nativity of Jesus Christ, blending over centuries with winter solstice traditions from across Europe. In Canada, early observances were introduced by French missionaries and European settlers in the 17th century. French colonists in New France established traditions of attending midnight mass and gathering for late-night feasts known as réveillon.

Following Confederation in 1867, Christmas gained formal recognition as a statutory public holiday across Canadian provinces and territories. Over the 19th and 20th centuries, secular customs—including decorating evergreen trees, hanging stockings, and welcoming Santa Claus—became woven into the holiday alongside traditional religious services.

Canadians typically spend Christmas Day surrounded by family and close friends. Celebrations often begin on Christmas Eve with candlelight church services or traditional meals like tourtière (a spiced meat pie popular in French-Canadian culture). On Christmas morning, families gather around the decorated tree to open gifts and check stockings. The afternoon centers on a festive dinner that traditionally features roast turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce, followed by regional desserts like butter tarts or bûche de Noël. Many families also head outside for a brisk winter walk, tobogganing, or an afternoon ice-skate.
